When a "Shock Wave" Hits Part VII
Barry and Sam were still at the lake house trying to make their escape with Barry's documents which could implicate Sam and Michael for tax evasion. By now Sam had really angered dangerous arms dealers who wanted them both dead and no doubt were calling in reinforcements to help.
WHEN ALL SEEMS LOST DON'T GIVE UP, PLAN!
Sam still had a plan up his sleeves. He was going to make homemade smoke bombs that would give them a window to make it from the house to the garage where Sam had left his car. He rapidly fried the bacon, collecting the grease in a glass container. Barry was eating the bacon and drinking from a fifth of gin as Sam continued to cook.
"Hey, go easy Barry."
"Hey, if you want me to run on this leg then I need to not feel it so much. Actually, I don't want to feel much about anything right now. It looks like a firing squad out there."
"They can't hit what they can't see. Trust me."
"Four thousand years ago, warriors disoriented their enemies by setting fire to bushels of straw soaked in grease and turning them into smoke bombs. Even though today's soldiers have traded burning crops for Hexachloroethane it doesn't mean those primitive methods aren't still effective."
Once the bacon was fried, Sam started assembling his homemade smoke bombs. Using scissors, he cut off the tops of beer cans, pouring the beer contents in glasses to consume later. Then filled the empty cans with bacon grease placing a square of aluminum foil over the top, then punched a small hole in the center. Taking pieces of paper towel he rolled them to create a wick then inserted it into the hole in the aluminum foil. He placed each prepared can in a container filled with ice cubes.
"Easy bub, cholesterol kills." As he continued to watch Barry consume the bacon.
"Yeah, so do trained killers. I don't know why they are waiting for backup. They should just come in here and kill us now." Barry said as he hobbled on one leg back into the kitchen.
"Well, don't tell them that. Okay, now look, these are smoke bombs. They will give us some kind of cover. It's like a curtain between us and Garret's shooters, but we're still going to need to haul ass. You ready?"
Still chewing on a piece of bacon after downing the fifth, Barry threw the remain portion of bacon on the counter and said. "I'm as ready as I'll ever be. Let's just do this." Then he grabbed one of the beer cans.
"Okay, whoa. This entire plan-- our lives-- depends on putting those directly in front of the guys with guns. Now, were you an all-county quarterback at Annalee High?"
"I was Nathan Detroit in Guys and Dolls."
"Yeah." Sam said as he removed the beer can from Barry's grip.
Outside Hartley was instructing his men on their next plan of action. "On my signal we're going to approach the house from the right...." He was interrupted by a thrown smoke bomb beer can.
One of Hartley's men saw the smoking can hit and roll, then pointed at it and yelled "get down" as he fled then ordered "take cover".
After the incident with the igniting beer can setting off the ammunition in the SUV almost killing them and the backyard flood light injuring one of them, Hartley's men ran for cover. But Hartley remained behind examining the beer cans as they landed near his feet.
Hartley yelled at his men. "They're not bombs."
Barry clutched the box full of his papers as he fled the house following Sam and moving as quickly as he could on his wounded leg as they headed for the garage and possible safety.
One of Hartley's men scaled the cement wall to get a better shot at Sam and Barry, another one had a rifle pointed at them from behind it. Sam yelled. "Watch out Barry." As he tried to protect his friend.
Having only two shotgun shells left, Sam did his best to defend their location as Barry tried his best to run on his wounded leg.
Hartley stood amongst the smoke waiting for his opportunity to take them down. He raised his gun and ordered "shoot them" and his men followed suit.
Dodging bullets, Sam assessed the situation as Barry dropped his box of documents and determined their best bet was to quickly return to the safety of the house, abandoning the idea of reaching the car.
Sam yelled at Barry as he rushed to pick up the box. "Let's go. Get in there." Ordering him to return to the house, touching him on the back to urge him to quicken his step. Sam used his remaining bullet to defend them as they ran for their lives.
