Sam and Barry had barely managed to reach the house alive after trying to make their way to the outside garage to escape in Sam's car. The smoke bombs worked, but not well enough.
This was their second attempt at getting out of the situation they unexpectedly found themselves in. All they wanted to do was to retrieve some documents Barry was storing at one of this client's lake house. Now they were trapped inside the home with arms dealers that wanted them both dead.
TIME TO RE-EVALUATION AND MAKE A NEW PLAN
Inside the house still using his box for cover, Barry yelled as they both ran down the hall to find safety as bullets were entering the house through the windows. "I thought there would be a curtain. What happened to the curtain?"
"It doesn't matter if the bad guys are on this side of the curtain." Sam yelled as he held his hand by his head for protection.
"Garret's reinforcements showed up." The shooting had stopped and they looked outside. Barry could see the reinforcements that had arrived. They were laying out a red cord.
"That's not a jump rope is it?" Barry asked. "No that's a detcord." A detonation cord is a thin, flexible plastic tube filled with PETN (Pentaerythritol tetranitrate). With the PETN exploding at a rate of approximately 4 miles per second, any common length of detcord appears to explode instantaneously. "Garret's going to make his own door. We won't even know where he's coming from."
"That's not good."
"Either is this." Sam ejected the empty shell from his rifle. "We're out of ammo."
Sam went to the refrigerator and removed a fresh can of beer, opened it and looked at Barry who had followed him and now was sitting on the counter.
"Okay good...another beer." Barry responded thinking Sam had another brilliant idea using a beer can. "That means you have a plan, right?" Nodding his head but looking skeptical. "What's this one for?"
"No, this is just a regular beer." He paused continuing to look at Barry. "It takes the sting off the fact that I'm going to die." Then raised the can to his lips and took a drink. After a long pause Sam added. "Gotta say most days it feels less immediate."
Sam grabbed a wrench, kneeled on the floor and started working under the stove.
Meanwhile, Hartley's men were on the move. Hartley told them. "Shirt the edge. We'll hit them in the back."
Sam finished then turned on the burners to the stove.
"Sam, how does the Lord's Prayer go?"
"Come on you heathen I've got a plan. It's just not a plan I like very much."
Barry jumped off the counter, wincing in pain, grabbed his box of documents and followed Sam out of the kitchen.
"This guy pays his gas bill, right?" Sam asked Barry as he reached the gas fireplace in the living room. "Why?" Barry asked as Sam hit the gasline with his wrench. "What are you... You are. You're going to blow up this house aren't you?"
"No technically, they're going to blow up the house. I'm just helping." Sam slapped Barry in the arm. "Come on. Go." "Ow" Barry proclaimed as Sam lead him away.
Still carrying his box of documents, Barry and Sam made their way back into the bathroom. They closed the door and overturned the porcelain pedestal bathtub.
"An explosion can kill you in four different ways. There's the shock way, the shrapnel, the fire, and the oxygen depletion. The best way to survive that deadly combination of factors is to run like hell. If running isn't an option your best bet is to create a small airtight space from the most flame retardant material you can find. When an explosion is headed your way it's hard to argue with an overturned porcelain bathtub."
They both got under it and lowered it to the floor to protect them when the house exploded. "If we live through this..." Sam said pointing his finger at Barry and shaking his head no indicating he didn't want anyone to know about this part of their ordeal.
"Not a word. I swear. Ever." Barry reassured him.
"The brisancy or shattering force of a natural gas explosion is no where near as powerful as C4 or RDX (T4). But just because the blast won't kill you doesn't mean you want to live through it without proper cover."
Hartley has strung the detcord in a square on the outside wall of the house in the back then wired it to a detonator. A couple of the men watched for Sam and Barry to escape. The others stood fairly close to the back wall out of the direct path of the upcoming explosion.
"Knock knock, Barry." Hartley announced then pushed the detonator button.
The combination of the explosion and the escaped gas inside the home caused the house to instantly explode killing Hartley and his men.
Sam and Barry held their heads as the house went up in flames. After it quieted down, they lifted the tub and got out from beneath it. "We made it." Barry said in utter disbelief and exuberant that they survived, he approached Sam to give him a hug of appreciation.
"Get away from me. You smell like bacon." Sam said as he pushed him away.
They made their way to where the hole was in the back of the house, then walked through it to freedom.
"Oh, man." Barry said at the sight of all the dead bodies and wreckage.
Sam reached down and picked up Hartley's gun. "Sorry Garret. I guess things got a little personal." Sam then put his arm around Barry's shoulder and told him "Let's go." As he lead his friend away from the gruesome scene.
